Better
English On-line
Technical Information
All
Better English On-line courses use WebCT for interaction
between students and faculty. Your computer needs to be configured
properly to participate in any course.
System
Requirements
Any Windows PC or Macintosh computer supporting Internet Explorer up to version
5 or Netscape up to version 4.76. Other browser software (later versions of
IE or Netscape, Opera, Lynx, iCab, etc.) may or may not work properly. Your
computer should have sound and video playback for some courses.
Browsers
(IE, Netscape, Others)
Configuring your browser can be done within WebCT by following the browser
tune-up instructions. The following must be set correctly:
- Make
sure that you can accept "cookies" - if these are
disabled or your system has a "cookie cruncher" installed,
you will get errors.
- Java
and Javascript must be enabled in the browser settings, otherwise
some features of the course will not work correctly.
- You
must have make sure that the disk cache is set to zero or turned
off, otherwise you will not see updated information on the
site as you work on class materials.
- The
browser must accept VeriSign security certificates in order
for you to logon to the course.
Other
Issues
Some computing environments limit access to the internet by using proxy servers
or firewalls. These services can prevent WebCT from being accessed
correctly. If your internet access is from a computer that is protected by
a firewall or that accesses material from a proxy server, contact the systems
administrator to allow WebCT to be accessed correctly.
